Shock in Mali as Defence Chief Reportedly Killed Amid Widespread Attacks

Mali has been thrown into turmoil following reports that its Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, has been killed during a wave of coordinated attacks on military installations across the country.
Sources indicate that the incident unfolded shortly after his residence in Kati—a key military stronghold near the capital, Bamako—was targeted. The assault is believed to be part of a broader offensive carried out by fighters linked to an al-Qaeda-affiliated group alongside Tuareg rebel forces.
General Camara, a powerful figure in Mali’s ruling military leadership after the 2020 and 2021 coups, had long been seen as a major force within the country’s political and security structure. His reported death is being described as a significant setback for Mali’s armed forces.
Despite Kati’s reputation as one of the most secure military zones in the country, attackers reportedly breached the area, launching a deadly operation that included heavy gunfire and explosions. The violence was not limited to Kati, as multiple locations—including Bamako, Gao, Kidal, and Sevare—also came under attack.
Residents in some areas, particularly in the north, continue to report ongoing clashes, with gunshots and blasts still being heard well over a day after the attacks began.
Meanwhile, Mali’s interim President, Assimi Goita, has been moved to a secure location but is said to remain in control of the country’s military operations.
The attacks have drawn widespread international condemnation, with global bodies and diplomatic institutions expressing deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Mali.
