Sperm count can be crucial if you are trying to father a child. A normal sperm ranges from 15 million sperm to more than 200 million sperm per milliliter (mL) of semen.

Anything less than 15 million sperm per milliliter or 39 million per ejaculate is considered low and it’s termed Oligospermia. Some men have no sperm in their semen and this condition is know medically as Azospermia.

An abnormal sperm count may also indicate an underlying health issue.

Sperm count can affect fertility because your chances of getting your partner pregnant decreases with a lower sperm count (less than 15 mil). Low sperm count is a major infertility factor in men.

You can determine your sperm parameters via semen fluid analysis which test basically for the following;

• number of sperm (volume)
• shape of sperm
• movements of sperm (motility)
The number, shape and motility of sperm are important sperm parameters to be considered if you are trying to get your partner pregnant.
A low or nil sperm production could be as a result of the following;
• sexually transmitted diseases/infections
• past surgeries
• disorder on any of the reproductive organs which may include, varicocele ( enlargement of veins within the scrotum), obstructed vas deferens, blockage of ducts via which sperm leaves the testicles during ejaculation, prostate issues etc
