A Call for Sanity: Suspend the Convention, Establish a Caretaker Committee
As the political temperature continues to rise within the party, stakeholders and loyal members are raising a unified voice — a call for sanity, discipline, and foresight. The growing discontent and division that have trailed the preparations for the upcoming party convention have become too glaring to ignore. Rather than allow chaos to destroy years of collective struggle and hard-won credibility, there is an urgent need to suspend the planned convention and put in place a neutral caretaker committee to stabilize the system.
At this critical point, what the party needs most is unity, not rivalry; reconciliation, not resentment. The political process has been hijacked by conflicting interests, questionable loyalties, and deep-seated mistrust. If the leadership continues to turn a blind eye, the convention may not only fail to produce credible outcomes but also deepen existing cracks within the structure. A divided house, as history has shown, cannot stand.
The essence of forming a caretaker committee is not to delay progress but to preserve it. Such a committee would serve as an interim body to reconcile aggrieved members, restructure internal operations, and create a fair playing field ahead of any major congress or convention. It will act as a bridge between the old and the new — ensuring that every voice, no matter how small, is heard in shaping the party’s future.
Many political parties in Nigeria have faced moments like this, where internal wrangling threatened their survival. The difference between those that fell apart and those that stood strong was the courage to take timely corrective action. Suspending the convention may seem drastic, but it is a necessary measure to prevent an even greater crisis. Leadership must not be driven by emotions or personal ambition; it must be guided by wisdom, prudence, and the greater good.
This is, therefore, a clarion call to the National Working Committee and all concerned stakeholders: let reason prevail over recklessness. The path of dialogue, reconciliation, and restructuring remains the only way forward. A caretaker committee is not a sign of weakness; it is an act of maturity — a strategic step to restore order and credibility before the party’s unity unravels beyond repair.
