Ahmad Yerima: Naval Officer to Face No Sanctions After Clash with Wike – Matawalle

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has confirmed that Lieutenant Ahmad Yerima, the naval officer involved in a verbal standoff with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, will not be subjected to any disciplinary measures.

Matawalle made the statement during an interview with DCL Hausa, addressing widespread speculation that Yerima might face sanctions following the circulation of a video showing the tense encounter on social media.

The footage, recorded during Wike’s visit to a contested site in Gaduwa District, Abuja, captured the FCT minister engaged in a heated discussion with the young naval officer, who reportedly maintained a respectful yet firm stance throughout.

According to LEADERSHIP, Wike had visited Plot 1946 on Monday, accusing military personnel of blocking officials from the FCT Department of Development Control from enforcing a stop-work order. The land is reportedly connected to retired Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, a former Chief of Naval Staff. Soldiers at the location prevented the minister’s entry, sparking the confrontation. Wike later stated that the developers lacked proper authorization for the construction.

Commenting on the situation, Matawalle emphasized that the matter should have been resolved through official channels rather than a public disagreement.

“The minister should have addressed his concerns with the appropriate authorities. Lieutenant Yerima was following orders. Any issues Wike had could have been directed to his superiors or to me, as I oversee naval matters,” Matawalle explained.

He praised Yerima for his professionalism and calm demeanor, noting that the officer remained disciplined while asserting his position.

“There was no breach of law or military regulations. He acted respectfully while performing his duties,” the minister added.

Matawalle further revealed that the Chief of Naval Staff has initiated an investigation into the contested land but clarified that no formal complaint has been submitted by the FCT Minister.

“This incident could have been avoided. Prior to visiting the site, the minister had already communicated with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who assured him that the issue would be addressed,” he concluded.
