Ahmed Abubakar: The Untold Truth Behind NIA DG’s Resignation

Leadership reports that Ahmed Abubakar, the former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), recently stated his resignation was due to personal reasons. However, there are suggestions that his departure may have been prompted by external pressures.

Abubakar mentioned in a statement on Saturday night that his decision to step down was due to “some personal issues, but nothing serious.” Despite this, security insiders have hinted that his resignation followed a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during which he was reportedly asked to resign due to significant intelligence failures during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.

One source indicated that the protests, which included displays of Russian flags and calls for military intervention, were highly coordinated, raising questions about the agency’s oversight. Another insider suggested that Abubakar’s departure might also be linked to his strained relationship with National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who oversees the NIA.

The source added that Abubakar was asked to resign abruptly on Saturday night, with the narrative of personal reasons coming later. Abubakar, who was extended in his role by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021, acknowledged his resignation at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, citing family pressures.

Attempts to reach Abubakar for further comment were unsuccessful, with his phone line indicating that calls were not permitted.
