An Open Letter to Mr. Peter Obi from Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC)
Dear Mr. Peter Obi,

We commend your courage, diligence, and resilience in Nigeria’s political landscape. Your defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Friday, 2nd January 2026, represents another significant milestone in your political journey.
As the 2027 general elections approach, Nigerians are once again called to engage actively in their civic responsibilities. In this context, we find it important to open a dialogue with you. Your prominence as the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and your background as a Christian naturally attract attention. Our aim is to clarify our position and understand your stance on issues affecting Nigerian Muslims.
At Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), we are guided by our motto: *Dialogue, No Violence*. We uphold a vision of Nigeria that requires collaboration among people of all faiths. Leadership in this country should not be exclusive to any one religion, and all Nigerians, including those from the South East, deserve equitable access to national leadership.
Our interest in your political ambitions stems from our commitment to the welfare of Nigerian Muslims. In preparation for the 2027 elections, we engage with prospective candidates to ensure our concerns are understood.
Our core expectations from you are in three areas:
- **Proportionate Representation** – Muslims constitute a significant portion of the population and have qualified, competent, and credible individuals who deserve meaningful inclusion in government appointments.
- **Equal Rights** – We seek parity with Nigerian Christians on issues where Muslims have historically been disadvantaged. For instance, we advocate that the first day of the Islamic New Year be recognized as a public holiday, similar to 1st January. We are keen to know your position on this and related matters.
- **Freedom of Religion** – We expect full protection of religious rights for all Nigerians, ensuring that no citizen’s faith is undermined.
Furthermore, we emphasize that the 2027 elections must remain a political process free of religious undertones or threats. While your supporters may play a role, the support of Nigerian Muslims, including their active engagement, will be crucial to your electoral success.
It is important to note that MURIC does not object to a Christian president. Our concerns focus on merit, competence, integrity, justice, and fairness. However, we will not endorse any candidate who compromises the fundamental rights of Muslims.
We therefore request a public statement from you clarifying your relationship with Nigerian Muslims and your intentions regarding our rights and welfare if you become president.
We trust that this message will reach you and that the media will facilitate its communication to the Nigerian public.
Please accept our highest regards and esteem.
