Atiku Tells Tinubu: Enforce LG Autonomy Ruling Now

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is urging President Bola Tinubu to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, warning that continued delay harms communities at the grassroots.

Atiku emphasized that Supreme Court judgments are final and not optional, and persistently refusing to enforce one is a direct breach of the Constitution and a violation of the presidential oath of office.

The Supreme Court had ruled on July 11, 2024, that it is unconstitutional for state governments to retain or manage funds meant for local councils. President Tinubu has warned state governors to comply with the ruling, threatening to issue an Executive Order for direct allocations from the Federation Account to local councils if they fail to do so.

Atiku accused Tinubu’s administration of deliberately ignoring the binding judgment, describing it as “defiance” rather than mere delay.

He argued that withholding financial autonomy from local governments cripples communities, stalls development, and deepens poverty at the grassroots.
