The Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos has detained twenty individuals suspected of stealing transformer cables and equipment valued at N40 million, property of Kuramo Industries Limited. The suspects were presented before a Lagos Magistrate’s court.
The arrested individuals were identified as Ukani Egwu, 29; Solomon Ofili, 22; Emeka Chimeobi, 27; Chidebere Arene, 25; Ugwuagbo Joel Oboma, 27; and Friday Akpan, 53. Additional suspects include Jacobs Zachariah, 35; Adesoye Alex, 24; Chive Ofili, 50; Mukaila Yusuf, 23; Chinoso Emmanuel, 23, among others.
The arrests followed a complaint by Kuramo Industries Limited to AIG Durosimi Olatoye of Zone 2 Command, alleging the theft and vandalization of their transformer and equipment. Acting on this complaint, AIG Olatoye ordered an investigation. Through strategic intelligence and tracking, the police apprehended the twenty suspects in the Isolo area of Lagos State.
Following an investigation led by Inspector Ayo Odubu, the suspects were charged at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on three counts: conspiracy, theft, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. The police prosecutor, ASP Francis Igbinosa, stated in case number L/22/2024 that the alleged offences took place on May 7, 2024, at Alhaji Ogunlani Road, off Festac Road, Ago Palace Road, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos. The suspects are accused of vandalizing a transformer and stealing equipment worth N40 million before being tracked and arrested.
These alleged actions violate sections 411, 287(9)(d), and 168 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015. The defendants pleaded not guilty. Magistrate Mr. Babalola granted them bail at N500,000 each, requiring one surety of the same amount, and scheduled the next hearing for June 26, 2024. Until bail conditions are met, the defendants will remain at the Ikoyi correctional facility.
