Budget Office DG Rejects Criticism of Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

The Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Tanimu Yakubu, has pushed back against growing criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, describing many of the arguments as misleading and lacking sound economic reasoning.
Yakubu said several of the critiques circulating in the public space, particularly on social media, are founded on what he termed an “arithmetic illusion” rather than credible economic analysis. According to him, these claims often lump together unrelated financial figures—such as tax revenues, oil earnings, borrowing, and supposed subsidy savings—to exaggerate the government’s actual income.
In an article titled *“Tinubunomics and the Arithmetic of Illusion,”* Yakubu argued that such faulty calculations create a distorted picture of the nation’s finances and misinform public debate about the administration’s policies.
