Businessman Alleges Extortion at Gunpoint by Fake Policemen

Nigerian businessman Kelechi Isaac, based in Ghana, has shared a harrowing account of being threatened and extorted by individuals posing as policemen in Bayelsa State. In an interview with Temitope Adetunji, Isaac recounts the ordeal that led to his being coerced into transferring ₦3 million.

Isaac had returned to Nigeria for a friend’s traditional wedding and was heading back on August 26, 2024, when his vehicle was stopped by five men in black police uniforms. Although they claimed to be members of the Inspector General of Police Special Squad, their lack of name tags and suspicious behavior raised red flags.

The situation escalated when the officers demanded to see Isaac’s phone, despite a directive from the Inspector General prohibiting random phone searches. When Isaac refused, citing the directive, the officers grew aggressive, accusing him of being a criminal and threatening violence.

The officers then began to physically assault Isaac and threatened to kill him and his friends unless he complied. Fearing for his life, Isaac unlocked his phone, which revealed a recent bank transaction. Noticing a substantial balance, the officers demanded he transfer ₦6 million. Isaac, who was initially negotiating, eventually transferred ₦3 million under duress.

During the extortion, Isaac’s friends were held in the car, and the situation seemed dire. After receiving the money, the officers continued driving, only releasing them later on a deserted road.

Isaac expressed his shock and disillusionment, particularly because the officers lacked identification, making the situation feel like a well-orchestrated kidnapping. He believes they would have followed through on their threats had he not complied.

Following the incident, Isaac contacted legal and media contacts for assistance. The media coverage led to police intervention, and Isaac reports that the officers involved have been arrested, and efforts are underway to recover the stolen funds.

Isaac’s trust in the Nigerian police has been severely shaken, though he commends the efforts of some police officials who have promised justice. He encourages others who face similar situations to speak out and report incidents, stressing that public awareness and reporting can lead to accountability and justice.
