Eedris Abdulkareem is a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter known for his socially conscious lyrics and outspoken personality. He gained prominence as a member of the hip-hop group Remedies in the late 1990s before launching a successful solo career. His 2004 song “Jaga Jaga,” which criticized corruption and poor governance in Nigeria, sparked significant controversy and even drew criticism from then-President Olusegun Obasanjo. Abdulkareem remains an influential figure in the Nigerian music scene, known for his bold commentary on social and political issues.
Eedris Abdulkareem’s song “Emi Lokan” takes a critical stance against the current Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu. The title, which translates to “It’s My Turn” in Yoruba, references Tinubu’s campaign slogan but is repurposed by Abdulkareem to highlight ongoing economic hardships and governmental failures. The song criticizes Tinubu’s administration for not addressing issues such as hunger and insecurity, which he claims are worse now than in past administrations
Abdulkareem has long been known for his socially conscious music, with “Jaga Jaga” being one of his most famous tracks that critiqued corruption and poor governance in Nigeria. In “Emi Lokan,” he builds on this legacy by pointing out that each successive government blames its predecessor while failing to bring about substantial change
