Nyesome Wike

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has called off its three-week strike following the intervention of Minister Nyesom Wike.

In a communiqué released yesterday in Abuja, union officials, including Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, Secretary Margaret Jetro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, announced the decision. They directed all striking teachers to return to work today.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the primary school teachers had initiated the strike on September 18 over unresolved welfare concerns, such as peculiar allowances, minimum wage arrears, and the lack of an upward salary review. The suspension of the strike followed Wike’s intervention, which included the payment of 40% of the outstanding 25 months of minimum wage arrears from 2019. The union praised the minister’s commitment to addressing the remaining 60% of the arrears.

Additionally, the teachers commended Wike for instructing the FCT Treasury to utilize 10% of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from the FCTA to facilitate payment of the remaining amount to the area c
