Taye Atske Selassie Elected as Ethiopia’s New President

Taye Atske
In a surprising development, Ethiopia’s parliament has elected Taye Atske Selassie as the new president. This decision comes after the recent hints of resignation from Sahle-Work Zewde, the nation’s first female head of state, who alluded to her departure in a social media post just two days prior.
Selassie’s election was confirmed during a joint session of the House of Federation and the House of Peoples’ Representatives in Addis Ababa. He brings a wealth of experience in foreign affairs to the role, having previously served as the country’s foreign minister and its permanent representative to the United Nations.
He takes over from Zewde, who held the presidency since 2018 but faced criticism for her perceived lack of response to ongoing conflicts across the country. Her recent comments on X raised concerns, leading many to speculate about her resigna
tion.
