Federal Government to Spend N8bn on Campaign to Encourage Timely Payment of Electricity Bills
The Federal Ministry of Power has announced plans to allocate N8 billion for a nationwide campaign aimed at educating Nigerians on the importance of timely electricity bill payments in 2025.
This was revealed by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, during his budget defense before the National Assembly’s joint committee on power on January 13.
Adelabu explained that the awareness campaign would be conducted through various platforms, including social media, digital channels, and traditional print media, to ensure it reaches all Nigerians. He emphasized that many citizens need to be re-educated on the importance of treating the power sector as a valuable national asset that requires collective protection.
“We are a nation of over 200 million people, so we must address every gap in communication, whether through social media, digital platforms, or print media, to properly educate the public. We have set aside N8 billion for this initiative,” Adelabu stated.
The Minister highlighted the need for public awareness on issues such as power theft and the necessity of regular bill payments. He urged citizens to report any illegal activities they observe and stressed the importance of seeing electricity assets as a shared national resource.
“We need a collective effort to ensure that everyone understands the value of these power assets, as well as the consequences of neglecting their responsibilities. This campaign will focus on re-orienting the public and fostering a sense of ownership in the power sector,” he concluded.
