FG Investigates Gas Seepage Reports in Rivers Community

The Federal Government has launched an investigation into reports of gas seepage in a community in Rivers State, raising concerns about environmental safety and the well-being of residents in the affected area.

Officials said the inquiry was initiated following complaints from community members who reported unusual gas emissions from the ground, which they fear could pose serious health and environmental risks. Residents claimed the suspected seepage had been noticed in several locations, prompting anxiety among locals who depend on the environment for their daily livelihoods.

Authorities disclosed that relevant regulatory agencies have been directed to assess the situation and determine the source of the suspected gas leak. The agencies are expected to conduct environmental tests and safety checks to establish whether the emissions are linked to oil and gas operations in the area or natural geological activity.

Community leaders said the strange occurrence was first noticed when residents observed bubbles emerging from wet soil and waterlogged areas, accompanied by a noticeable gas-like odor. According to them, the situation has heightened fears among villagers, particularly due to the region’s long history of oil and gas exploration.

A representative of the Federal Government assured that the investigation would be thorough and transparent. He noted that experts would evaluate possible risks to human health, farmland, and water sources, while also recommending immediate safety measures where necessary.

Environmental specialists are expected to collect samples and carry out technical studies to determine the composition and origin of the gas. Their findings will guide the government’s response and any necessary remedial actions.

Meanwhile, residents have called for urgent intervention, urging authorities to ensure their safety and prevent potential disasters. Some community members also appealed for temporary protective measures while investigations are ongoing.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to protecting communities in oil-producing regions and pledged to take appropriate action once the investigation is concluded. Authorities emphasized that public safety remains a priority as efforts continue to determine the cause and extent of the reported gas seepage.
