Four Nigerian Students Jailed for Violent Disorder After Leicester Gang Fight

A thorough investigation by UK authorities has resulted in the conviction of four Nigerian students for their involvement in a violent altercation in Leicester in November 2021. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of November 4, escalated into a gang fight involving weapons, including knives and a baseball bat. One victim, an 18-year-old man, sustained stab wounds during the confrontation and required hospital treatment.

The suspects fled the scene after the incident, prompting an extensive investigation by police. This included analyzing CCTV footage, mobile phone data, and public appeals, which ultimately led to the identification of the individuals involved.

After a six-week trial that concluded in October, the following students were sentenced:

Destiny Ojo, 21, from Warland Road, Plumstead, London, received a seven-year sentence for violent disorder, attempted grievous bodily harm, and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Habib Lawal, 21, from Lumley Close, Bexley, London, was sentenced to five years for violent disorder, attempted grievous bodily harm, and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Ridwanulahi Raheem, 21, from George Mathers Road, Lambeth, London, was sentenced to three years for violent disorder and possession of a bladed article.

Joshua Davies-Ero, 21, from Springfield Road, Bexley, London, was sentenced to two years for violent disorder.

A fifth individual, Justin Asamoah, 22, from Rawnsley Avenue, Merton, had previously pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article and is set to be sentenced on November 22.

The altercation occurred at approximately 3 a.m. when Ojo, Lawal, Raheem, and Davies-Ero crossed paths with another group in New Park Street, Leicester city center. What began as a verbal exchange soon escalated into a violent confrontation. During the fight, the four defendants armed themselves with weapons, including a crutch, a baseball bat, and knives. Raheem was later seen wielding a large knife.

The violence continued until one of the men from the opposing group was thrown to the ground and stabbed multiple times, suffering four stab wounds. The victim was treated at a nearby hospital and later discharged.

Detective Constable Sean Downey commented, “This incident underscores the severe dangers of violent disorder. It is fortunate that no one was more seriously injured, and the outcome could have been much worse. Our thorough investigation, supported by CCTV, phone data, and public tips, helped us bring those responsible to justice.”

He added, “We are committed to ensuring public safety and will take firm action against anyone involved in violent behavior.”
