Gunmen Attack Monarch’s Palace in Kwara, Kill Residents and Abduct Several Others

Tragedy struck Shagbe community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Saturday evening, as unidentified gunmen launched a violent assault on the town, targeting the palace of the traditional ruler. Several residents were killed, while many others were reportedly kidnapped during the brazen attack.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the armed attackers stormed the town in large numbers and headed straight for the palace of the Onishagbe of Shagbe. Although it appears the monarch himself was not harmed, the assailants inflicted serious casualties on the community, operating for hours without any resistance.
A local source, speaking under anonymity, revealed that multiple calls were placed to security agencies throughout the attack—but no response was received. “They came heavily armed, went straight to the palace, killed people, took some away, and left without any challenge,” the source said. “We kept calling for help, but no one came.”
While the exact number of casualties and kidnapped victims remains unconfirmed, the incident has thrown the community into deep fear and mourning.
The Kwara State Government has since acknowledged the attack and assured the public that steps are being taken to address the situation and restore order.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a similar occurrence on August 24, 2025, when two individuals were abducted in Babanla, another community within Ifelodun LGA—just hours after Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had visited the area to promise enhanced security.
Despite efforts by the state leadership to reassure residents and boost public confidence, this latest attack underscores ongoing concerns about insecurity in rural parts of Kwara, where violent crimes and delayed security responses have become increasingly common.
