Ìfẹ̀ Lọ́kàn? Adeleke’s Alleged Succession Preference Raises Questions Over Osogbo’s 2030 Governorship Aspiration

Governor Ademola Adeleke may have inadvertently stirred fresh political debate in Osun State following reports that he indicated a preference for a successor from Ile-Ife upon the completion of his expected second term in office in 2030.

According to sources familiar with discussions between the governor and a group of prominent Osogbo elders, Adeleke allegedly suggested that his preferred successor would emerge from Ile-Ife, a position that has since generated widespread reactions across political and traditional circles in the state.

Sources at the meeting further claimed that the governor noted that support for an Osogbo indigene as his successor could depend largely on the level of electoral support the town delivers for him in the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

While the governor has not publicly commented on the reported remarks, the development has already become a subject of intense political discussion, particularly given the historical significance of both Osogbo and Ile-Ife in Osun State politics.

Despite their prominence, neither Osogbo, the state capital, nor Ile-Ife, regarded as the cradle of the Yoruba race, has produced an elected governor since the creation of Osun State in 1991. This reality has fuelled sustained advocacy from stakeholders in both towns for greater political inclusion and equitable access to the state’s highest elective office.

Political observers note that any indication of support for one town over the other is likely to attract considerable attention, especially as conversations surrounding succession politics gradually begin to take shape ahead of 2030.

In Osogbo, the reported comments are said to have unsettled some political stakeholders who view the governorship ambition of the town as a legitimate aspiration that deserves broad political support. There are indications that some opinion leaders and political actors may now be reassessing their strategic calculations ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The development has also reignited conversations about which political platform may ultimately offer Osogbo its best opportunity to realise its long-standing governorship ambition. Within certain political circles, there is growing speculation that support may increasingly shift towards the All Progressive Congress perceived to be more receptive to the town’s aspirations.

Analysts believe that perceptions surrounding succession politics, even several years ahead of 2030, could have implications for voter behaviour in the 2026 governorship election. They argue that political loyalty is often influenced not only by present realities but also by expectations about future opportunities and representation.

As Osun prepares for another crucial electoral contest, the emerging debate over succession and regional balance may become one of the underlying issues shaping political alignments across the state.

Whether the reported remarks will significantly alter voting patterns remains to be seen, but they have undoubtedly added a new dimension to the political conversation and intensified scrutiny of the state’s evolving succession dynamics.
