A deadly attack on a military base in Mayenti, Borno State, has left four vigilantes dead and four soldiers missing. The attack, carried out by ISWAP fighters, occurred on Monday night, just a day after the group posted a video showing the execution of Nigerian Army Brigadier-General Samaila Uba.
The attackers, who arrived on motorcycles, attempted to overrun the facility but were repelled by troops of Operation Hadin Kai. However, the insurgents managed to burn two trucks belonging to the Borno State Ministry of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction, and Resettlement, and killed four laborers.
The attack has sparked concerns over Nigeria’s capacity to confront the insurgency, with citizens demanding decisive action to eliminate terrorists. Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has urged the federal government to procure more drones and adopt technology-driven surveillance to fight the insurgents.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the renewed insecurity as a serious security threat, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take necessary steps or resign. The military has assured the public of its commitment to improving air-ground coordination and strengthening intelligence operations to combat terrorism.
