King Sunny Ade Explains His Stance on Rumored Relationship with Onyeka Onwenu

Nigerian music icon King Sunny Ade (KSA) has addressed the rumors surrounding a supposed affair with the late Onyeka Onwenu. During a recent condolence visit to Onwenu’s family, KSA paid tribute to the legendary singer and shared his reflections on their relationship.
King Sunny Ade clarified that the speculation about their relationship was part of a promotional strategy. “It was a tactic to promote our music. We were launching ‘Wait for Me.’ The rumors that we were romantically involved were part of that strategy. Neither of us confirmed nor denied it,” he explained.
He praised Onwenu as an exceptional woman who offered invaluable advice and support. “She was someone who would offer guidance and it was always excellent advice,” KSA said.
Regarding their collaboration on the song ‘Wait for Me,’ KSA noted that Onwenu often led their joint efforts. “In our collaborations, she would take the lead. She would suggest, ‘Sunny, let’s approach it this way,’ and it always worked well,” he added.
KSA expressed his commitment to honoring Onwenu by continuing to perform their song together, acknowledging her as the song’s rightful owner. “I will keep singing it in her honor throughout my life. I’ve performed it in many countries and always credited her as the song’s true owner,” he affirmed.
He also reflected on the values he learned from Onwenu, highlighting her dedication to making a global impact with their music. “She was always the first to say we must aim high. It wasn’t just about us or our nation but about reaching the world,” KSA concluded.
Onyeka Onwenu, a beloved figure in Nigerian entertainment, passed away on July 30, leaving a significant legacy in the industry.
