Man Shot Dead While Buying Food in Lagos
Tragedy struck in the Ojo-Igbede area of Lagos State on Saturday, July 19, when an unidentified man was gunned down in broad daylight while attempting to purchase food.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the man, who had only recently moved to the neighborhood, was waiting in line at a food vendor’s stall when two men riding a motorcycle pulled up and called out to him. What appeared to be a casual encounter quickly turned deadly.
“The man had just arrived in the area and nobody really knew much about him,” one resident said, requesting anonymity due to fear of retaliation. “He was standing in line when the two men on a bike arrived. They signaled him to come over. At first, he hesitated, but eventually approached them. They instructed him to lie down—some say kneel—and then they shot him in the head.”
Panic erupted at the scene as customers fled in different directions, trying to avoid being caught in the violence. A disturbing image reportedly taken moments after the shooting showed the victim lying in a pool of blood while onlookers gathered nearby.
An X (formerly Twitter) page focused on anti-cult activities claimed that members of the Aye cult group might have been behind the attack. The platform suggested that while the motive is still unclear, there may be a link to ongoing cult-related tensions in the area.
“A man was shot dead in Ojo—Aye cultists allegedly took responsibility, though there’s debate about whether the victim had any gang ties. He had just moved into the area and was out to buy food when he was targeted,” the post read.
Another resident, who identified himself as Bode, said the shooting sparked fear among locals. “Everyone is scared now. We don’t know what’s going on or who might be next. We’ve started being more cautious about our surroundings.”
Attempts to get a comment from the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as of press time. Calls and text messages sent to his phone went unanswered.
In a separate report earlier this week, PUNCH Metro revealed that police had arrested three suspects connected to the fatal stabbing of a man known as Scoro in Lagos Island. That incident reportedly stemmed from a violent clash between rival groups over a building-related dispute.
