Nigeria Cannot Continue as One Nation, It Must Break Up” – APC Leader, Dr. Orire
Dr. Adebayo Orire, a medical doctor and prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, has argued that Nigeria’s unity is unsustainable and that the country must separate to achieve true progress. In an interview at his residence in Ikoro-Ekiti, in the Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Orire highlighted the country’s deep ethnic divisions as a major obstacle to its development.
According to Orire, the root cause of Nigeria’s challenges lies in its structural and systemic flaws, which he believes will continue to impede progress unless significant reforms are made. He stressed that a breakup is inevitable for Nigeria to either thrive or disintegrate entirely.
“A nation like Nigeria cannot continue as it is; it must divide,” Orire asserted. “For Nigeria to prosper, it must either grow and flourish or split into fragments. If it continues the way it is, it will either degrade, dissolve, or self-destruct—it must break up. The solution is a peaceful separation, without violence or bloodshed.”
He further explained that the country’s stagnation was a clear sign that Nigeria is unable to sustain itself. “When a nation is unable to sustain itself, like Nigeria is, it will inevitably fall apart. That is the future we are heading towards,” he added.
Orire pointed out the growing demands for secession from various ethnic groups, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Yoruba, the Middle Belt, and the Hausa. He suggested that the deep-rooted ethnic identities of Nigerians, which often take precedence over their national identity, would ultimately lead to the country’s fragmentation.
“No one identifies as Nigerian first—they are Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, or Fulani first, before anything else,” he said. “For over a century, we’ve failed to unite as one people. Why are we still forcing it? Why do we continue this charade?”
He also criticized the Nigerian state for allowing widespread corruption and violence without consequences, stating, “In other nations, such issues wouldn’t be tolerated. But in Nigeria, we’ve allowed it to persist endlessly. We destroy ourselves with our inaction.”
Turning to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Orire described the President as an intelligent and experienced politician capable of solving the country’s problems, but expressed frustration that, since taking office, he has failed to address the nation’s core issues.
“If you take Tinubu out of office, he could solve Nigeria’s problems in minutes,” Orire remarked. “But since becoming president, something seems to have changed. He’s not been able to deliver on those solutions now that
he’s in power.”
