NLC Holds Emergency Meeting Over Ajaero’s Arrest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has convened an emergency closed-door meeting in response to the arrest of its President, Joe Ajaero, by the Department of State Services (DSS). Ajaero was apprehended by DSS agents as he was preparing to travel to the UK for a global workers’ conference, reportedly without a warrant or official notice.
Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Public Relations, has expressed concern over Ajaero’s current location and well-being, as his whereabouts remain unclear. The NLC has denounced the arrest as a “blatant act of lawlessness and intimidation” and is demanding Ajaero’s immediate release.
The Congress has also called on the international community and human rights organizations to recognize what it sees as a rise in authoritarian practices in Nigeria. Ajaero was set to speak at the Trade Union Congress in the UK on critical topics such as workers’ rights and economic justice.
