NNPP Urges INEC to Recognise Agbo Major-Led Leadership Following Court Order

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly implement the Federal Capital Territory High Court’s directive to recognise the Agbo Major-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Bello Kawu of the FCT High Court had on Tuesday ordered INEC to update its records to reflect the authentic national executives of the NNPP within 72 hours. The ruling specifically directed the commission to acknowledge the leadership headed by Agbo Major, in accordance with the party’s constitution.
In a statement on Saturday in Lagos, NNPP National Secretary Ogini Olaposi stressed that the court order leaves no room for delay. “We hope that the current leadership in INEC will comply with valid court orders and not obstruct the execution of a clear judicial pronouncement. The court barred INEC from engaging with the Dr Ahmed Ajuji-led faction of the party pending the outcome of judicial review,” he said, as reported by Sunday PUNCH.
Olaposi expressed concern that INEC had allegedly received correspondence from the Ajuji-led group even while the judgment was being delivered in court. He clarified that a notice of appeal or motion for stay does not impede the enforcement of lawful court orders unless explicitly granted. “No order for stay of execution has been issued or served on INEC. Justice Kawu’s ruling is specific, direct, and binding, mandating the commission to update its records to reflect the Major-led NWC and restore the original NNPP logo,” he added.
The party further reassured its members that those expelled for anti-party conduct remain so, while former members who defected to other parties may be welcomed back. Olaposi also called on the party faithful to continue grassroots mobilisation, noting that the court victory positions the NNPP to fully participate in the 2027 general elections.
“With this judicial affirmation, the sky is the limit for NNPP. We are committed to strengthening our presence nationwide and ensuring the party thrives in the upcoming elections,” he said.
Sunday PUNCH sources say the development underscores ongoing factional disputes within the NNPP, highlighting the role of the judiciary in resolving leadership conflicts ahead of the 2027 polls.
