NYSC Tragedy in Ogun State as Corp Member Dies, Staff Detained as Investigation Underway

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed the death of a Corps Member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, prompting authorities to detain a staff member linked to the incident as investigations get underway.

In a statement to Sunday PUNCH, Caroline Embu, NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, said the scheme is fully cooperating with security agencies to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. “The management of NYSC is deeply saddened by the loss of a Corps Member in Abeokuta. While the circumstances are still under investigation, a staff member has been taken into custody by the relevant authorities,” she said.

The NYSC reassured the public that it upholds strict codes of conduct for both staff and Corps Members, emphasizing that any form of misconduct or abuse of office will not be tolerated. The scheme urged Nigerians to avoid speculation while investigations continue, noting that due process must take its course.

“The welfare, safety, and dignity of our Corps Members remain paramount. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and remain committed to ensuring justice is served,” the statement added.

According to sources within the scheme, the incident has reignited concerns over the safety and protection mechanisms for Corps Members nationwide, highlighting the importance of strict oversight within the NYSC system.

Sunday PUNCH also gathered that authorities are examining all operational protocols at the Abeokuta orientation camp to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
