No One Influences Us — EFCC Dismisses Bala Mohammed’s Accusations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed allegations made by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, accusing the agency of being used for political persecution.

In a statement released on Friday, the anti-graft body described the governor’s claims as unfounded and misleading, stressing that the Commission operates independently and is not influenced by political actors, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The EFCC said it carries out its duties strictly in line with the law, without bias or external interference, and condemned attempts to portray it as a tool in political disputes.

According to the Commission, it is inaccurate and dishonest to suggest that any political office holder has the authority to direct or manipulate its investigations. It added that its actions in Bauchi State are based solely on evidence gathered through lawful and thorough investigations.

The agency recalled that Governor Mohammed was facing money laundering charges prior to his election in 2019, noting that the case was suspended only because of the constitutional immunity attached to his office.

“If the governor seeks transparency, he should clarify who influenced the Commission to investigate and prosecute him in 2016,” the statement said.

On the ongoing Bauchi State case, the EFCC explained that charges against some government officials are already before the court, allowing the public to judge whether the matter is driven by facts or political motives. It also clarified that the governor was listed in the charge documents as the approving authority for the transactions under scrutiny.

The Commission dismissed claims linking the investigation to terrorism financing as misleading and irresponsible, stating that it neither fabricates offences nor ignores violations established under Nigerian law.

Emphasising the importance of accountability, the EFCC criticised what it described as double standards among politicians who cry persecution when investigations involve their allies but remain silent when similar actions affect others.

The agency cited recent prosecutions involving members of the ruling party, noting that no accusations of political witch-hunt were raised in those cases.

The EFCC urged Governor Mohammed to concentrate on governance and allow the Commission to continue its mandate of strengthening transparency and combating financial crimes for national development.
