No Polio Vaccines for Children, Yet N130bn Airport and N320m Luxury Car Raise Eyebrows in Osun

By Adebayo Adedeji

Osun State has regressed under the regime of Governor Ademola Adeleke as many citizens now struggle to access basic necessities of life.

It is disheartening to note that while the citizens suffer untold hardship on account of lukewarm attitude of their leaders to their wellbeing, the government continues to prioritize provision of white elephant project and ostentatious lifestyle of its officials.

It is unbelievable to learn that many primary health centres in the state lack basic drugs to offer the patients. In the last three months, specifically, the Osun State Government has failed to provide primary health centres with the routine IPV2 ( second-dose Inactivated Polio Vaccine) — a basic vaccine that should be as readily available as “pure water”. While this ugly development persists, the state government keeps channelling enormous public resources into frivolous projects citizens consider extravagant.

Just today, some concerned students of UNIOSUN threatened to go on the streets if the government does not reverse its decision to purchase a N320 million car for the governor’s godfather, who incidentally is the Pro-Chancellor of the state-owned university, Professor Wale Oladipo.

The aggrieved students questioned the government’s rationale for using their school fees to sustain the insensitive and insanely opulent lifestyle of the unproductive political chieftain.

The same concerns sorroud the reported N130 billion airport project in the governor’s hometown of Ede.  Citizens ask while Governor Adeleke is desperate and bent on building an airport at a time it poorly funds agriculture, health, education and other key sectors of the economy.

Whereas infrastructure development is important, no airport can substitute for a functional healthcare system.

According to the English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, a life without effective governance is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short,” a classical description of the current situation of Osun State.
