NSCDC Uncovers Major Bunkering Operation in Rivers, Arrests Three Suspects

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has dismantled a significant illegal refinery site and arrested three individuals in the Odagwa community of Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The operation, which lasted several hours, led operatives to a forest location where crude oil was being illicitly siphoned. This operation followed the destruction of a multinational oil company’s manifold by the suspects.

Speaking to the press at the scene in Port Harcourt on Monday, Rivers State NSCDC Commandant Basil Igwebueze, represented by the corps’ spokesperson SP Olufemi Ayodele, detailed the bust. He explained that the Special Intelligence Squad (SIS) of NSCDC Commandant-General Dr. Ahmed Abubakar conducted the operation.

Igwebueze highlighted Abubakar’s directive to enhance operational and intelligence measures to protect national assets and infrastructure. He emphasized Abubakar’s commitment to combating illegal petroleum activities, pipeline vandalism, and economic sabotage. “In a short period, the CG’s SIS has dismantled over 350 illegal bunkering sites in the Niger Delta, with hundreds of suspects arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

The recent raid resulted in the arrest of three suspects, while others fled into the forest. The operation uncovered how criminals invaded a multinational’s manifold through a broken fence, using industrial hoses and metal pipes to siphon and store crude oil for illegal refining.

Igwebueze described the elaborate setup, noting the environmental and health hazards posed by such illegal operations. He called for a collective effort to combat illegal bunkering, stressing the need for local communities and stakeholders to reject these harmful activities.

Reaffirming the NSCDC’s dedication to its mission, he stated, “The fight against oil theft, vandalism, and illegal dealings in petroleum products is non-negotiable. The NSCDC is fully committed to safeguarding all critical national assets and infrastructure, and we will do this relentlessly and without compromise.”
