Osun: A Willing Suitor and a Reluctant Bride – By Journalist Ismail Omipidan

The political atmosphere in Osun State today feels oddly familiar. We’ve seen a similar script play out before—particularly during the 2014 re-election campaign of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola. But there’s a notable difference this time: unlike Aregbesola, who stood firm in his party convictions, Governor Ademola Adeleke appears far more unsettled, with signs of political desperation not just from him, but also from some of his aides and loyalists.

Before I proceed, I’d like to be upfront about a few things. I know this piece will draw criticism. That’s fine. I welcome honest, informed discourse. But if the only contribution you can offer is abuse or empty insults, may that negativity remain with you, God willing. Now, to my honest admissions: my political objections to Governor Adeleke didn’t start recently, nor are they rooted in personal animosity. In fact, they go as far back as 2018—well before I even met former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

Truth be told, I simply don’t believe Governor Adeleke is among the most capable individuals Osun has to offer. If what we’ve seen over the past few years represents the best of his leadership, then granting him another term would be a grave disservice to the state. From public missteps to awkward gaffes, the governor has repeatedly shown that he may not be the right fit for the challenges Osun faces.

Even in areas where many expected him to shine—especially entertainment, given his background and flair—there’s been little of substance. If anything, it has been underwhelming. We’ve seen enough. It’s time to turn the page and bring in a more competent hand. For the future of Osun, we must seek a better path forward.
