The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s primary opposition party, has claimed to know the backers of the #EndBadGovernance protests that erupted across the country in August.
The protests, which took place between August 1 and 10, were driven by widespread discontent over the country’s economic challenges. Demonstrators in various cities voiced their frustrations over the prevailing hardships.
During a press conference at the party’s Abuja headquarters on Monday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba criticized the federal government for its response to the protests. He suggested that the root cause of the unrest is the pervasive issue of hunger rather than any specific individuals or groups.
Ologunagba’s comments came in the wake of the arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero. He stated, “It is essential for the government to exercise caution. While there was widespread protest, the government’s approach has been to label some participants as terrorists and charge them accordingly. We believe that the real sponsor of these protests is hunger. The administration should focus on addressing hunger instead of targeting Nigerians. The current policies are harsh and are exacerbating people’s suffering, especially as schools are reopening and many are struggling.”
