As the Ondo State governorship election approaches, scheduled for November 16, 2024, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reassured the public of a peaceful and secure voting process. He announced that over 22,000 police officers would be deployed to safeguard lives and property before, during, and after the election.

Egbetokun made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, the state capital, organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday. Represented by Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 17, Abiodun Asabi, the IGP emphasized that the police would collaborate with other security agencies to prevent any disruption to public order.

He noted, “The success of this crucial election depends on maintaining peace, order, and security. Any breakdown in security could jeopardize the entire process. It is vital for all stakeholders to approach their duties with a strong sense of security awareness.”

Egbetokun highlighted the importance of conducting roles fairly and orderly, as this would minimize security risks and enhance the election’s credibility. He reiterated that the police, in partnership with other security forces, would be working as a unified team to address potential threats, ensure tight security around polling stations, and protect voters, election officials, and materials.

To ensure comprehensive security, both visible and covert operations will be carried out by the joint security teams. The police, with the support of other agencies, will deploy a total of 22,239 officers to oversee the election, reinforcing the commitment to providing robust security throughout the election process.
