Reasons FRSC Caution Against Night Travel

Shehu Mohammed, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has called on the public and stakeholders to avoid traveling at night after a tragic accident in Niger.
In a statement issued by Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, in Abuja on Monday, Mohammed emphasized the need for caution and discouraged the use of unsafe transportation. This warning follows a fatal crash at KM 02, Koriagi village on the Agaei-Lapai-Bida route, Niger.
The accident, which occurred at 4:40 AM on Sunday, resulted from excessive speeding and led to a major fire. It involved 55 male adults, with 37 fatalities and 18 injuries. The crash involved a DAF tanker, two DAF trucks, and a Toyota car. The tanker, carrying petrol from Lagos to Kano, overturned due to speed, igniting a fire that consumed all involved vehicles.
Earlier, the FRSC had implemented a clampdown on transporting flammable substances, deploying patrols to monitor and identify such vehicles. Despite these efforts, many drivers continue to disregard safety advisories, especially at night when enforcement is less active.
Mohammed noted that while the FRSC has made significant strides in addressing unsafe road behaviors through partnerships with transport unions, security agencies, and state traffic management bodies, public cooperation is crucial. He urged the public to support FRSC’s initiatives to mitigate road traffic violations and enhance safety.
