Revival of ‘Old’ National Anthem Signals a New Era for Nigeria – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the reinstatement of Nigeria’s former national anthem, ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee,’ signifies the dawn of a long-awaited revolution for the country.

He emphasized that this move fosters a sense of unity and brotherhood among Nigerians, transcending ethnic and linguistic differences.

Speaking on Wednesday at a joint session of the National Assembly, which marked the first anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Akpabio lauded Tinubu’s achievements over the past year. He highlighted the symbolic importance of bringing back the old anthem during Tinubu’s tenure.

“Among all your significant achievements, reintroducing the old national anthem stands out. It takes us back to our roots, reminding us that despite our diverse tribes and languages, we are united as brothers. As we progress in any field—be it battle, sports, or other endeavors—we must salute Nigeria,” Akpabio remarked.

Referring to President Tinubu’s visit to the National Assembly, Akpabio likened it to a “waka pass” in Nollywood, indicating a brief yet meaningful appearance. He noted that Tinubu’s decision to visit the Assembly ahead of Democracy Day on June 12 was a gesture of respect.

“There is no better place to initiate this revolution than by reconnecting with our roots. Here in the National Assembly, we are not merely representatives but elected voices of the Nigerian people. Our voice is Nigeria’s voice,” Akpabio asserted.

In response, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude for the lawmakers’ support and cooperation, praising them as exceptional leaders that the nation has long desired.

“I came here to express my heartfelt thanks. You are foremost leaders who speak for our people and have been at the forefront of our struggle. This institution, these hallowed chambers, symbolize our collective pursuit of freedom and unity. The revival of ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’ reflects our rich diversity,” Tinubu stated.
