Sallah Tragedy: See numbers of People Dead and Injured in Kwara Car Crash
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) confirmed that 19 people lost their lives in a car accident in Kwara State, just 72 hours before Eid-el-Kabir. The tragic incident happened around 8 PM on Thursday in Kanbi village along Jebba Road.
In preparation for the upcoming festivities, security measures are being heightened nationwide. The Federal Government has declared Monday and Tuesday as public holidays to celebrate the festival.
Providing details on the accident, FRSC spokesman Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide stated that a blue Iveco trailer without registration and a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number LSD363YE were involved. Preliminary investigations indicated that excessive speed and improper overtaking were the primary causes.
Ogungbemide explained, “A total of 25 people were involved, including 13 male adults, five female adults, two female children, and five male children. Out of these, five people sustained injuries (three male adults and two female adults), while 19 were killed (11 male adults, three female adults, three male children, and two female children).”
The injured have been taken to Orisun Ayo Hospital, where one body was also placed in the morgue. The remaining 18 bodies were claimed by their families.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed his concern over the increasing recklessness of drivers who disregard traffic laws, leading to unnecessary loss of life and property damage. He emphasized his 2024 agenda aimed at significantly reducing road accidents and has instructed commanding officers to enhance special patrols targeting these
violations.
