Scandal Rocks Leadership of Prominent Orthodox Church in Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria – The leader of a major Orthodox Church in Nigeria has found himself at the center of a controversy over allegations of falsifying academic credentials. Documents obtained by our news outlet suggest that the Primate falsely claimed to have completed his Master’s degree at Lagos State University (LASU) in Ojo during the 2000/2001 academic year. However, a closer inspection of his academic transcript, dated March 11, 2015, paints a different picture.

According to the transcript, while the Primate’s year of admission was listed as 2000/2001, his graduation year is recorded as 1999/2000—one year prior to the start of his supposed program. This discrepancy has raised serious doubts about the legitimacy of his qualifications.

In addition, a report from the church’s screening and election committee, dated May 19, 2015, had previously flagged concerns regarding the Primate’s eligibility for office. The committee recommended that he step down unless he could provide proof of his legitimate academic credentials.

Despite these revelations, the Primate has resisted calls to resign, prompting widespread public backlash. As a result, the matter has been brought before the Federal High Court in Lagos under suit number FHC/C/CS/1124/24, filed on June 28, 2024.

The plaintiff in the case is seeking several legal remedies, including a declaration that the Primate is ineligible to hold the position of Archbishop/Primate due to his failure to present a valid educational certificate, in line with Section 105 of the church’s 2014 constitution. Additionally, they are requesting an order for the Primate to immediately vacate his position.

The case has stirred intense discussion within the Orthodox Church community in Nigeria, with many calling into question the integrity of the church’s leadership. “These allegations are deeply troubling. We need transparency and accountability,” said one anonymous church member. “This scandal has shaken our confidence in the leadership, and it’s essential that our church leader demonstrates the highest ethical standards moving forward.”

As the legal proceedings unfold, all eyes remain on the court’s decision and its potential impact on the future of the church’s leadership.
