A dispute among police officers over a sex worker led to a fatal shooting in Enugu State’s Nsukka Local Government Area. A young man named Amuche was killed by a police officer from the Nsukka Urban Police Division on Echara Road.
The incident occurred on Sunday night when a group of plainclothes police officers went out for an evening’s leisure. Trouble began when one officer started dancing with a woman, suspected to be a sex worker, at a bar. She accused the officer of inappropriate behavior, which escalated into an altercation.
Eyewitnesses reported that the woman alerted the bar’s management, leading to a confrontation between the manager and the officer. This confrontation intensified, resulting in a physical clash. The officer called for backup, leading to more officers joining the fray. During the chaos, one officer retrieved an AK-47 rifle from their vehicle and fired shots to disperse the crowd. Tragically, a stray bullet struck Amuche, who was playing snooker nearby.
Amuche was attempting to flee the scene when he was hit. In the aftermath, the police officers also detained the bar manager, accusing him of assaulting their colleague.
The shooting sparked protests as angry youths carried Amuche’s body to the Nsukka Police Division, demanding justice. However, they were directed to take the body to a morgue.
Efforts to obtain a response from the police were unsuccessful, as the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, did not answer calls at the time of the report.
