Thugs Disrupt Burial in Ondo, Launch Violent Attack on Obesere and His Band

A burial ceremony in Ondo State descended into chaos over the weekend when a group of armed thugs stormed the venue and violently attacked Fuji music icon, Abass Akande Obesere, widely known as “Omo Rapala,” along with members of his band.
According to eyewitnesses, the event — which initially began as a peaceful farewell gathering — turned turbulent shortly after Obesere began his performance. The assailants, described as rough-looking young men, invaded the premises, causing panic among mourners and guests who had gathered to pay their last respects.
Within minutes, what was meant to be a solemn ceremony transformed into a frightening scene, as the attackers reportedly smashed equipment, disrupted the musical performance, and attempted to assault the artist. Obesere’s band members were forced to flee the stage as the commotion intensified. Several items, including musical instruments and personal belongings, were said to have been damaged in the chaos.
The exact motive behind the attack remains unclear. While some onlookers suggested the incident may have stemmed from a disagreement involving event organizers, others believe the attackers may have been acting under the influence of alcohol or cult-related tensions in the area. Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the matter.
Security operatives eventually intervened to restore order, but not before the atmosphere had been completely destabilized. Though no fatalities were reported, many guests sustained minor injuries while attempting to escape the scene.
Supporters of Obesere have since condemned the attack, describing it as “senseless” and calling for a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book. Fans also took to social media to express shock and relief that the legendary Fuji star escaped without serious harm.
As the community grapples with the disturbing incident, residents are urging security agencies to intensify surveillance around social gatherings, noting that rising cases of violence at public events pose a growing threat to peace and safety in the region.
The incident has once again highlighted the concerning trend of thuggery infiltrating social and cultural events, turning moments of remembrance and celebration into arenas of fear.
