Tinubu Advocates for Stronger African Military Cooperation to Tackle Security Challenges

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, FRN President

President Bola Tinubu has called on African governments to strengthen military collaboration to address growing security concerns across the continent. He emphasized the responsibility of African leaders and armed forces to safeguard peace, stability, and security for their citizens.

Tinubu made these remarks during the closing ceremony of the 2nd Africa Military Games (AMGA) in Abuja on Saturday night. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment as Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the security and stability of the region.

The President praised African military forces for consistently demonstrating unity, camaraderie, and a sense of shared purpose, which transcends national borders and reinforces the bond of a united African family.

“This event is more than just a showcase of athletic skill; it is a celebration of collaboration, excellence, and the unwavering determination of our military forces to stand united,” Tinubu remarked. “The competitions we’ve seen remind us of the incredible outcomes possible when we unite—not only as soldiers but as protectors of a common destiny.”

Tinubu also highlighted the significant role of sports in promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being, which are vital for military readiness in today’s complex and volatile environments. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating security threats and crime in Nigeria and, as ECOWAS Chair, pledged to continue efforts for regional stability.

To achieve these goals, Tinubu called for deeper cooperation between African nations, stressing the importance of strong, collaborative military relationships.

The President also commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the local organizing committee for the successful execution of the event. “Your professionalism and discipline have shown that you are not only exceptional military personnel but also outstanding athletes,” Tinubu said. “The smooth organization of these Games is a reflection of the collective excellence of Africa’s armed forces.”

In his remarks, General Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, noted that the theme of this year’s AMGA, “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” demonstrated how sports can help bridge divides, foster friendship, and strengthen ties among African militaries. He also expressed pride in the participation of athletes from 20 countries, showcasing their physical prowess, discipline, and military values.

General Musa concluded by highlighting that the event, which took place without any casualties, underscored the professionalism and readiness of African military personnel. He praised the athletes for upholding the principles of honor, resilience, and unity through their participation.
