Two Dead as Tipper Truck Collides with Gas Tanker on Lekki–Epe Expressway

Lagos, Nigeria , Tragedy struck the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Sangotedo early Saturday morning when a speeding tipper truck collided with a stationary gas tanker, leaving two people dead and triggering a massive fire that damaged nearby properties.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, with Controller General Mrs. Margaret Adeseyestating that it occurred around 2:36 a.m. near the Tera Ahmed Bus Stop. “The incident involved a 20-tonne tipper truck coming from the Epe axis, which rammed into the rear of a stationary 30-tonne gas tanker that had failed to pull off the highway,” she said.
The collision sparked a fire that quickly spread to surrounding areas, affecting three warehouses and 10 roadside shops, including a gym and a generator house. Local media outlets, including The Punch and Daily Times, highlighted the incident as one of several traffic-related accidents raising concerns about road safety in Lagos.
Firefighters from Lekki Phase II, Oniru, and Epe II stations were immediately dispatched to the scene and successfully brought the blaze under control. According to Mrs. Adeseye, their quick response prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby filling station and a fully loaded 33,000-litre Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker, averting a potentially larger disaster.
After extinguishing the flames, emergency responders recovered three Sienna buses, one Toyota Corolla, and a forkliftfrom the affected premises. Tragically, the driver of the tipper truck and his assistant were confirmed dead, while the gas tanker driver escaped without injury.
Authorities are continuing efforts to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow along the busy expressway. Mrs. Adeseye reassured residents that normalcy had largely returned to the area, thanks to the swift action of emergency personnel.
The incident has sparked renewed discussion on social media platforms and in outlets like The Guardian Nigeria, with residents urging stricter enforcement of road safety regulations and proper maintenance of commercial vehicles.
