Wike Declares Abuja Safe for Diplomats,Promises World-Class Capital

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the commitment of the FCT Administration to ensuring a safe and conducive environment for members of the diplomatic community operating in Abuja.
Wike gave the assurance during the Saint Patrick’s Day reception and the inauguration of the new Embassy of Ireland in Abuja, where he emphasised ongoing efforts to improve security and infrastructure within the nation’s capital.
According to The Punch, the minister stated that the current administration under President Bola Tinubu is focused on transforming Abuja into a globally competitive capital city capable of meeting international standards.
“We have a responsibility to provide the right environment for you to operate effectively. Our goal is to make Abuja one of the best capital cities in the world,” Wike said, adding that noticeable improvements in security have already been recorded.
He assured diplomats that the FCT Administration would continue to strengthen safety measures, noting that the government remains committed to creating an enabling atmosphere for foreign missions and their staff.
Wike also expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with the diplomatic corps, describing their presence as vital to Nigeria’s international engagement. According to The Guardian Nigeria, he commended Ireland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Peter Ryan, on the opening of the new embassy and the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day.
Speaking further, the minister clarified that his remarks were made in his capacity as the “landlord” of the diplomatic community in Abuja, rather than as a representative of the Federal Government or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He, however, warned foreign missions against leaving allocated lands undeveloped, stressing that such plots are vulnerable to encroachment. “We have asked embassies to take possession of their lands and develop them. The law will take its course where necessary,” he said, a stance echoed in reports by The Nation Newspaper.
Wike maintained that his administration would not hesitate to enforce regulations to ensure proper land use within the FCT, regardless of opposition.
The minister also hinted at a potential official visit to Ireland, following an invitation from the Irish envoy, noting that the timing now appears favourable.
The event was attended by Ireland’s Minister of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, Jack Chambers, alongside several diplomats and dignitaries, further underscoring the importance of Nigeria’s engagement with the international community.
