2027: Obasanjo Pushes for Obi-Kwankwaso Presidential Alliance

2027: Obasanjo Pushes for Obi-Kwankwaso Presidential Alliance

Former President **Olusegun Obasanjo** is reportedly taking the lead in efforts to forge a joint presidential ticket between **Peter Obi** and **Rabiu Kwankwaso** for the 2027 elections.

According to **Daily Trust**, Obasanjo believes that pairing the two former presidential candidates could strengthen the opposition’s chances against **President Bola Ahmed Tinubu**. Obi and Kwankwaso are expected to vie for the **African Democratic Congress (ADC)** ticket, challenging former Vice President **Atiku Abubakar**, as part of a broader strategy to consolidate the opposition.

Sources told the publication that Obasanjo has tentatively persuaded Kwankwaso to consider the **vice-presidential slot** on Obi’s ticket. “Kwankwaso traveled to Abeokuta last week to meet with Obasanjo, who encouraged him to join the ADC and accept being Obi’s running mate. This echoes advice he received earlier from General Ibrahim Babangida, though IBB did not go as far as discussing the VP position,” one insider revealed.

The thinking, according to sources, is that political dynamics both domestically and internationally currently favor an Obi presidency. Obasanjo, a strong supporter of Obi, has previously been credited with recommending him to Atiku as a vice-presidential candidate in 2019.

“The goal is to have Obi and Kwankwaso combine forces to take on Atiku for the ADC ticket. Party dynamics strongly favor Atiku, and neither Obi nor Kwankwaso alone is likely to defeat him at the primaries. Together, however, they may have a real chance,” a source said.

Kwankwaso, through a close aide, confirmed that discussions are ongoing with **key political stakeholders across the spectrum**, though the party has not yet formalized its position. “While we have not finalized our path forward, we are in high-level talks with parties and individuals. Our position will soon be made public. Nigeria needs a clear departure from the current state of insecurity and systemic collapse, and we are working toward a better future,” the aide added.

While Kwankwaso has neither confirmed nor denied recent meetings with Obasanjo and Obi, sources indicate that two strategic options are being explored to ensure an **Obi-Kwankwaso ticket** plays a central role in the 2027 elections.
