Ulamas Forum Issues 34-Point Demand, Criticizes Nigeria Government
By CHARLES IWUOHA
The Ulamas Forum in Nigeria has voiced strong concerns about the current state of the nation, highlighting widespread economic hardship and governance failures. In a recent statement, the Forum expressed its deep worry over the plight of ordinary citizens who are grappling with inflation, hunger, and inadequate leadership, which it accuses of fostering corruption and mismanagement.
Dr. Terna Francis, representing the Forum, criticized political leaders for their perceived detachment from the realities faced by the populace, accusing them of isolating themselves in comfort while engaging in reckless misappropriation of public funds.
The Forum’s 34-point demand, issued on Tuesday and shared with News Express, calls on the federal government to address the escalating dissatisfaction among the youth and to respond proactively to the protests that have emerged in various states. The statement urges the government to take meaningful steps to alleviate the suffering of its citizens and improve economic policies to better serve the public.
Key demands include:
– **Empathetic Response:** The government should acknowledge the gravity of the situation, revise its economic policies, and focus on initiatives that genuinely benefit the Nigerian people.
– **Reduction of Costs:** Immediate measures are needed to reduce food, energy, and transportation costs to combat poverty and hunger.
– **Accountability:** The government must hold security agencies accountable for any excessive use of force during recent protests.
– **Policy Adjustment:** A more thoughtful and comprehensive response to the concerns expressed by the youth is required, including tangible steps to address their grievances.
– **Cost of Governance:** There should be a reduction in the lavish lifestyles and excessive allowances of public officials.
– **Youth Engagement:** Constructive dialogue with the youth should replace criminalization and should focus on their legitimate grievances.
– **Youth Empowerment:** Implement extensive programs for skill acquisition and community projects to engage and uplift the youth.
– **Transparency:** Government should disclose details about beneficiaries of its empowerment programs to ensure transparency and reduce perceived bias.
– **Insecurity:** Addressing the severe insecurity in the North, which is exacerbating poverty and hunger, is crucial.
– **State Responsibility:** State governments should establish offices to oversee their share of federal support programs and ensure accountability.
– **Legislative Action:** Elected representatives should convene meetings to address the nation’s issues and promote the interests of the people.
The Ulamas Forum also urged:
– **Non-Partisan Conduct:** The need for religious and civic leaders to remain non-partisan while advocating for good governance.
– **Patriotic Commitment:** A call for prioritizing national interests over personal gains, avoiding corruption, and holding elected officials accountable.
– **Dialogue Over Violence:** A recommendation for open dialogue and peaceful resolution of grievances rather than violence and destruction.
The statement was signed by prominent members of the Ulamas Forum, including Malam Aminu Inuwa Muhammad, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar, and others.
The Forum’s demands reflect a broad call for substantial reforms and greater responsiveness from the government to address the systemic issues affecting Nigeria.
