Bloodshed at Accord Primaries: APC Demands Justice for Murdered Iwo Woman, Taliat Simbiat

• Knocks Gov. Adeleke for Shielding Thugs in Government House

The Osun State All Progressives Congress Governorship Campaign Council expresses deep concern over the large-scale violence, injuries and destruction of property reportedly associated with the factional primaries conducted by the Governor Ademola Adeleke-led Accord Party in Osun State over the weekend.

Reports emerging from different parts of the state paint a disturbing picture of chaos and bloodshed arising from what should ordinarily have been a peaceful democratic exercise.

Internal party primaries are expected to be a celebration of democracy and an opportunity for members to freely choose their representatives. Sadly, what has been witnessed in the last two days has been the direct opposite, confirming the Accord as a killer-party that sucks blood of innocent citizens for survival and power which the public must avoid.

According to reports available to us, several members of the Accord Party and innocent citizens have suffered varying degrees of injuries, while lives have reportedly been lost as a result of the violence that accompanied the exercise.

This unfortunate development once again raises serious concerns about the culture of desperation and winner-takes-all politics that has become synonymous with the Adeleke political dynasty.

The APC Campaign Council has repeatedly drawn public attention to the dangerous flirtation and open romance of the Adeleke government with violent elements and questionable individuals on the black-and-wanted list of the Nigeria Police.

The Council has consistently warned the Osun government against the shielding of these thugs and persons and the normalization of conduct capable of undermining public peace and security.

What has unfolded in the aftermath of the Accord factional primaries loyal to Governor Ademola Adeleke, in our view, underscores the consequences of associating with and empowering individuals of controversial character and disposition.

Particularly troubling are reports from Iwo Local Government Area indicating that Mrs Taliat Simbiat of Ward 3, Iwo, lost her life during the violence, while no fewer than 30 persons reportedly sustained serious injuries in the local government.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and wish those injured a speedy recovery.

It is deeply disturbing that internal political disagreements could escalate to the point of claiming the life of party members. This is both tragic and unacceptable.

The recurring loss of innocent lives as a result of political recklessness must no longer be tolerated.

The APC Campaign Council urges Governor Ademola Adeleke to fully cooperate with law enforcement agencies in identifying, apprehending and prosecuting all those responsible for the killing of Mrs Taliat Simbiat and numerous citizens who sustained injuries. He must not play ostrich this time around. No individual, regardless of political affiliation or status, should be shielded from justice.

The APC Campaign Council charges Governor Adeleke to hand to the police Emir Ajagungbade, Nurudeen Alawonle and other criminal aides of his hiding in the Government House Okefia. The Okefia Government House should remain a hallowed home of decent government officials, not a fortress for janjaweed and coven of monstrous political bandits.

The sanctity of human life must remain paramount, and the governor must demonstrate a commitment to peace, civility and democratic values.
