UNICAL VC, Obi, Exposes 54 Fake Graduates Mobilized for NYSC

Prof. Florence Obi

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has removed 54 fraudulent graduates who were improperly mobilized by the University of Calabar. This action is part of NYSC’s ongoing efforts to ensure that only qualified individuals receive the NYSC Certificate of National Service.

Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, NYSC’s Director-General, announced this in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja by Eddy Megwa, the Director of Information and Public Relations. Ahmed also noted that 19 individuals who had initially registered online were prevented from participating, and four certificates of national service from other offenders were not issued. This adds to the 101 certificates that were previously invalidated, bringing the total to 178.

Ahmed praised the University of Calabar’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, for her role in identifying and reporting the issue. He revealed that Obi had noticed some names on the mobilization list that did not belong and alerted the NYSC. Ahmed acknowledged her contribution, noting that similar issues had been observed before, including cases where non-students were included on the graduation list.

The NYSC is committed to thoroughly addressing issues within its mobilization process and will strengthen its collaboration with Heads of Corps Producing Institutions and other relevant parties to combat such problems. Ahmed emphasized that any shortcomings in the mobilization process reflect on the integrity of the institution’s management and stressed the need for responsible data handling. He also urged employers to verify the authenticity of NYSC certificates presented by job applicants.
