Soyinka Receives Prestigious Cuban Haydee Santamaria Medal

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has been honored with Cuba’s Haydee Santamaria Medal from Casa de las Americas. The award was presented by Miguel Diaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President, in a ceremony held yesterday in Lagos.

Jorge Fornet, Director of the Centre for Literary Research at Casa de las Americas, shared the news on the Cuban Presidency’s X handle, describing the award as a well-deserved recognition for Soyinka’s contributions. The medal is given to individuals and groups who align with Casa de las Americas’ mission to enrich, defend, and integrate genuine Cuban and South American cultures.

The event not only celebrated Soyinka’s achievement but also marked his 90th birthday and the 60th anniversary of his first visit to Cuba. Diaz-Canel expressed gratitude for Soyinka’s visit during a challenging period for Cuba, referring to him as a longstanding advocate for just causes.

During the ceremony, Soyinka expressed a deep connection to Cuba, saying, “Cuba is also my home,” highlighting the strong cultural bonds between the island and Africa. The event also coincided with the 63rd anniversary of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba and the presentation of the Dulce María Loynaz International Prize to Soyinka.

Soyinka reflected on his impactful experiences in Cuba and acknowledged the country’s role in Africa’s liberation struggles. He emphasized the importance of remembering Cuba’s contributions to sovereignty and self-determination. Theatre critic and theorist Omar Valiño praised Soyinka for his genuine approach to life and his deep connection to Yoruba cultural wisdom.
