Tinubu’s Administration to End ASUU Strikes, Says Akume
George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has stated that the ongoing strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will be resolved under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. He urged ASUU to prioritize dialogue over strikes.
Akume’s remarks follow the establishment of a 31-member committee aimed at renegotiating agreements with ASUU to prevent potential strikes after recent threats from the union.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the OSGF, Akume made these comments during a courtesy visit from the Conference of Alumni Association of Nigerian Universities, led by President Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, in Abuja.
The statement noted, “The SGF encouraged the association to support the government’s initiatives in enhancing the nation’s tertiary education and assured that industrial actions will soon become a thing of the past. He urged academic leaders to favor dialogue over strikes.”
Akume emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector for sustainable growth, highlighting that neglecting education jeopardizes the future of citizens. He stated, “A nation that fails to invest in education is undermining its own destiny. President Tinubu believes that quality education should be accessible to every Nigerian, regardless of their background.”
He praised the Tertiary Education Trust Fund for its significant contributions to improving infrastructure across various institutions in all six geopolitical zones.
Earlier, Prof. Ochefu expressed the association’s desire to collaborate with the government to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria. He also requested that the Federal Government include association members in the appointments of Governing Councils for federal tertiary institutions and ensure deserving individuals receive national honors.
