NNPC Pledges to Cut Methane Emissions by 60% by 2031

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has reiterated its goal to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas industry by 60% by 2031, with a long-term ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

In a recent statement on its X platform, NNPC highlighted this commitment as a critical step in addressing climate change, aligning with Nigeria’s influential role in Africa through the Global Methane Pledge initiative.

During a meeting with Robert Leahman, the U.S. State Department’s Global Methane Program Manager, and a team from Deloitte, NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, discussed the company’s ongoing efforts to reach these targets. Kyari stressed that reducing methane emissions is not just an environmental issue but also key to Nigeria’s broader energy transition.

“We are collaborating with international partners to adopt the best practices and innovative solutions necessary to tackle methane emissions,” Kyari stated at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.

The talks focused on joint methane reduction projects, including a pilot initiative in the Niger Delta, aimed at establishing emissions baselines, preventing methane leaks, and promoting sustainable practices within Nigeria’s energy sector.

Leahman commended Nigeria’s proactive stance, noting that the country’s leadership in the Global Methane Pledge serves as a model for the rest of Africa. “These initiatives will not only reduce emissions but also contribute to sustainable development within the energy sector,” he concluded.
