How Distance Learning Is The Future of Education – NOUN Vice-Chancellor

How Distance Learning Is The Future of Education – NOUN Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, has emphasized that Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is the future of education globally.

During the 27th Matriculation Ceremony, which was held both virtually and in-person at various NOUN study centers across the country, Prof. Peters welcomed the new students and highlighted the significant role ODL plays in providing access to quality education.

“Our educational model enables students to learn at their own pace, balancing their studies with professional and family responsibilities,” said Peters. “NOUN is helping to bridge the gap in access to higher education, ensuring that all Nigerians, regardless of their age, location, or personal situation, have the opportunity to pursue their educational goals.”

Prof. Peters described NOUN’s approach to ODL as “revolutionary,” particularly in an era where digital innovation and the demand for flexible learning options are reshaping the educational landscape.

He further pointed out that NOUN sets itself apart from traditional universities by offering exceptional flexibility while maintaining high standards. The university’s programs are accredited, and its graduates are highly sought after in the job market.

This year’s matriculation saw an intake of 18,106 new undergraduate students, 5,196 postgraduate students, 10 MPhil students, and 32 PhD candidates.

“Our model demonstrates that education can overcome geographical barriers, making learning a fundamental right for all,” Peters remarked. “It also proves that academic excellence can be achieved without the need for physical presence in a classroom.”

The Vice-Chancellor urged the new students to aim for excellence, saying, “This is not just about earning a degree; it’s about transforming lives through education and setting higher standards for yourself.”

The ceremony also included the administration of the matriculation oath by the University Registrar, Mr. Oladipo Ajayi, officially inducting the students into the NOUN community.
