APC Responds to Allegations Regarding Tinubu’s Role in Obasa’s Impeachment

APC Responds to Allegations Regarding Tinubu’s Role in Obasa’s Impeachment

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that it is unaware of any involvement by President Bola Tinubu in the impeachment of the former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa was recently removed from his position by members of the Assembly and succeeded by Mojisola Meranda.

Following the impeachment, the lawmakers explained that their decision was intended to protect the integrity of both the legislature and the state. Seye Oladejo, the APC’s Publicity Secretary in Lagos, told Daily Post that the impeachment process was a matter strictly within the purview of the Assembly and not a party issue. He emphasized the autonomy of the legislature, noting that all branches of government in Lagos function independently.

Oladejo remarked, “The impeachment is not a party matter; it is an internal Assembly issue. The House of Assembly operates independently, as a vital component of our democracy. What the members have made public should suffice for now.”

Regarding claims of President Tinubu’s involvement, Oladejo responded, “I cannot speak to who was or wasn’t involved in this decision. We can only accept what the lawmakers have publicly stated. They indicated their decision to change leadership, and that’s the end of the matter.”

He continued by reflecting on the nature of politics: “Politics is driven by interests, and what remains constant in politics is one’s personal interest at any given time. This is not unique to Nigeria; it is a universal principle.”

Oladejo also denied reports suggesting that Obasa was eyeing a future gubernatorial bid. “I’m not aware of any ongoing governorship campaigns. The next gubernatorial election is not until 2027. The APC’s focus remains on good governance and fulfilling our commitments to the people who entrusted us with power,” he stated. “Currently, our priority is preparing for the party’s congress and the local government elections scheduled for mid-year.”
