See Reasons Sowore Urges Egbetokun to Step Down, Calls Him an “Illegal IGP”

Omoyele Sowore has called on Kayode Egbetokun, the current Inspector General of Police, to retire and make way for others to advance within the police force, labeling Egbetokun’s continued tenure as “illegal.” Sowore criticized Egbetokun for overstaying his time in office, despite having reached both the age of 60 and a 35-year service milestone in 2024.

Sowore’s remarks come after reports that two police officers, including Inspector Linus Okoro, were found guilty of similar infractions for not stepping down upon retirement. Okoro was arrested for his actions, but Egbetokun, instead of stepping aside, allegedly responded by detaining citizens who spoke out against his continued hold on the IGP position.

It was also reported that Egbetokun cut short his participation in a conference in Rwanda to address growing concerns within the police force over his refusal to vacate the position. Sowore argued that the solution was simple: Egbetokun should retire and allow new leadership to emerge. The hashtag #EgbetokunMustGo and #RevolutionNow have since gained traction, with many echoing Sowore’s call for change.
